Your Price in Camels

Scraps was wondering how much she’d go for in camels if she auctioned herself off at the bedouin shuk in Be’er Sheva, so I googled it.

Not recommended. Too many women and wives wear camel-colored clothing. That said, the price in Egypt seems to be approximately 20 camels for a woman. Here it’s reported as 16, so we can guess the range is about 18+/-5. Since most of it probably depends on looks, you can value yourself accordingly.

On the other hand, one must recall that Egypt is a bargaining country, so the offer might have been low to allow for a price rise in negotiations.

Finally, as Scraps pointed out, skyrocketing prices in Egypt partially sparked the uprising there, so it’s very likely that inflation has raised your price. In Egypt you are probably worth far more by now.

It’s important not to sell yourself cheap, even if you’re desperate. So, if you’re going to have yourself sold for camels, make sure it’s at least 30.

(PS: Scraps also dug up this woman/camel calculator, but I don’t think it’s based on actual market prices. Still, it might give you a rough estimate of how you compare in the spec checklist.)

  1. Respectfully submitting that perhaps a different equivalency should be used. There’s that old saying “S/he’s worth their weight in gold.” Given the price of gold today, many people in shidduchim are going to go waaay up in worth. And it might abolish that trend among many frum girls to keep themselves at anorexic weights–they would need the poundage to compete for shidduchim. And those on the higher end of the weight scale might find themselves being sought out because they are worth more.

  2. “worth her weight in gold”…back in the day, a heavier girl was considered healthier, so the more she weighed the more she was worth. These days it’s probably the opposite – her weight in gold would have to be the dowry…it’s like an incentive…kinda like they were offering for “older” girls a few years back, just with weight 😉

    I wonder what my wife will say if I tell her how many camels she is worth…

  3. Well halachically a women is minimally worth a peruta…go figure. In general the ring you are given at the wedding (aproximate value at around 100 bucks) is your worth so maybe those camels don’t sound that bad after all.

  4. I ran my oldest daughter through the calculator and came up with 43 camels, 3 goats and 9 sheep which probably a factor of her age. Let’s just say she is worth inordinately more to me than a small menagerie and I hope she continues to think for herself.

  5. And to think the only financial assets I have are stocks, why didn’t I invest in Camels (much less sheep and goats)……………….

    //sarcasm off

  6. 35 camels, 4 goats, 0 sheep.
    And after extensive research, turns out your value exponentially increases if you’re totally male subservient (i.e. never go outside w/o permission, clean up after him, live in the kitchen)-what did you expect?

  7. I am quite happy that I am raising girls who use the grey matter between their ears – that is worth more than a whole flock of sheep to me 🙂
